My first experience in SUPER GT
Thanks to Nismo driver exchange program, I flew to Japan to compete for the first time in Super GT with the Nissan NDDP Team, after the test with the Altima V8 Supercar in Australia.
I had two days of relaxation in Tokyo and a fun evening with my friend and Nissan driver Michael Krumm, before travel to Suzuka by Shinkansen and adapt to both the car and the Japanese humid heat (+34 degrees and 80% humidity!) .
The language barrier makes things a bit difficult but all the team and team mates Daiki and Kazuki helped me at all times to adapt to everything.
I was amazed by the amount of fans since early time on Friday. Here the drivers are super stars and I loved seeing so many young people and families enjoying with us. Also was very cool to meet the huge amount of fans with covers of Gran Turismo to sign them!
Once on track during the free practice I had only 2 timed laps but set a good time on my second lap.
In the warm-up on Sunday after making P2 in Qualy, set the 3rd fastest time in GT300 with a 30 lap set of tyres, so everything was looking very good.
It was a long hot day, in which a mistake during the safety car cost us a 90s stop&go penalty.
Our pace was very strong, running in second place during the first 2h. The first car was two seconds faster than the rest so for me it is a “GT400″ and we did not fight them. The penalty came when I was on track and after setting the fastest lap of the car so far, then Daiki and Kazuki were called to push 100%. A shame as we lost P2 to P15, so podium finish was practically over.
At the end P9 recovering few positions.
My impressions are very positive, the team has valued my job on the set-up and my pace on track in my first race in Japan, but of course knowing we could have fought for victory, is a bit frustrating!
Once again thanks to all S Road NDDP Team and Nissan for this great opportunity.
